Refrigerator/Freezer tips PDF Print E-mail
A common concern before or after a storm is "How long will food last in my refrigerator or freezer when the power's out?"

As a common rule of thumb, a refrigerator should keep food safely cold for approximately four hours, if the door isn't opened.

A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours (or 24 hours is the freezer is half full) as long as the door remains closed. Food may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40 degrees or below.

Remember, if you're ever in doubt, throw it out. If you have advance warning of a storm, stock up on coolers and ice to help prolong the life of your refrigerated foods.
